Bobby Motaung's arrest could have a negative impact on the Kaizer Chiefs brand

It's not only politicians who're giving us this corruption!

The arrest of Kaizer Chiefs' caretaker Bobby Motaung can only prove one thing - that corruption is not only amongst government officials! I've always thought that the private sector was so innocent when it comes to all the activities of corruption we always hear about by our local politicians. It looks like I was very wrong!

When the news about the arrest of Booby Motaung hit my ears, it was really an element of surprise. Motaung was arrested by the Hawks on Wednesday on charges of fraud - it has been reported that Motaung was arrested in connection with alleged tender fraud and corruption related to Mpumalanga’s R1.2-billion Mbombela Stadium.

Motaung is a director of Lefika Emerging Equity (Pty) Ltd, which won a tender to design the stadium. The construction of the stadium has been fraught with allegations of fraud and corruption that might have led to the assassination of former Mbombela council speaker Jimmy Mohlala.

From a PRP's desk, Motaung's arrest could have a negative impact on the Kaizer Chiefs brand!

It now seems like Motaung's arrest has something to do with the death of former Mbombela council speaker Jimmy Mohlala, but we can only wait for the trial to commence. If this turns out to be true, Amakhosi might find themselves losing a lot of support from the Nelspruit side.

I would personally not be happy to support Kaizer Chiefs especially when they play at Mbombela Stadium knowing that the Stadium was build on dirty money and blood. Kaizer Chiefs now has to work extra hard to ensure that they don't lose supporters following this unforeseen and unfortunate incident otherwise the reputation might go down the drain!

  1. It goes without saying that where there is money involved there is also trouble. I did not believe it either but its true and it is negative publicity for the club. As far as I am concerned it will take a lot of doing to move them from negative to neutral and then positive.

    1. Well said from a PR angle! As potential PRPs we must know that our behaviour outside our organisations is still under the spotlight. This means that we should always mind our actions for the sake of protecting our brand images!

    2. but as we all know sports fans live by their own rules.. we might believe that this will give the club a negative image in the minds of kaizer chiefs fans, but only to find that kaizer ciefs fans do not care much for how the stadium was built or that Booby Motaung broke the law(allegedly), as long as the team wins it wont matter much, amongst fans.. but not so much with the sponsors

    3. I must say, you've made a very profound remark Edwin! Crime is becoming a sport, we tend to just get used to it and accept it!

    1. As I said if it indeed true that Bobby was involved in the fraudulent activities around Mbombela's stadium, that's negative publicity for Amakhosi! Who wants to support criminals?!

  3. This is were the PRP of the team Kaizer Chiefs has to come up with a strategy to come with a positive plan to maintain good standards for the brand and image of the company because people will now associate the team with corruption.

  5. Motoung needs to apologize then Kaizer must hold a media conference and outline how are they going to deal with him to ensure that his arrests wont harm the team and sponsors.

    1. You're right Lucky, if the charges against Motaung turn out to be true, some clients and sponsors might think twice about Kaizer Chiefs... Our actions outside our organisations are also very significant!

  7. Whatever position he is in the soccer industry, he committed a crime and he should do the time. Sadly the reputation and credibility of Kaizer Cheifs and all its personnel will know be in question.
